THE ONE-WAY DOOR
The Money Left Investing And Went To The Sportsbook
More than half of young investors moved money meant for investing. On Friday a federal appeals court split on whether the contracts are legal.
The math is the whole story. On a coin flip, a sportsbook asks you to risk a hundred ten dollars to win a hundred. Win half your bets and you still go broke.
That gap has a name. Bookmakers call it the vig. It is the fee baked into the price. Football knowledge does not touch it.
On Friday the Ninth Circuit ruled. Sports event contracts are not swaps. It turned down Kalshi, Crypto.com and Robinhood, who wanted Nevada blocked from shutting them down. In April the Third Circuit had ruled the opposite way.
Joshua Mitts of Columbia Law School has a name for it. A classic circuit split. Two federal appeals courts now disagree on the same question. That is the machinery that carries a case to the Supreme Court.
The market answered in an hour. DraftKings rose seven percent. Flutter, which owns FanDuel, rose more than six.

WHAT TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS BECOMES IN FORTY YEARS
That is the historical stock market rate applied over a working life, from research by Hendrik Bessembinder at Arizona State. The same ten thousand run through the vig ends at nothing.
Both numbers describe the same ten thousand dollars. What separates them is forty years of compounding and nothing else.
Compounding is boring on purpose. It pays people who do nothing for a very long time. That is why it loses to a football game on a Sunday afternoon.
Start with scale. A Siena poll in February put active online sportsbook accounts at twenty seven percent of Americans. Among men aged eighteen to forty nine it was fifty two percent. This is not a fringe habit.
Now the part that made this a story. A Betterment survey asked a thousand investors. More than half of the Gen Z group had moved money earmarked for investing into sports bets. About a quarter told the survey they count those bets as part of a long term plan.
One survey is not a census. Treat it as a reading.
Harder numbers sit elsewhere. The New York Federal Reserve reports that legal sports betting has arrived alongside rising delinquency and bankruptcy. A U.S. News survey last year found a quarter of bettors had missed a bill. Thirty percent had taken on debt.
None of this existed before 2018. That year the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban. The states built the industry in eight years.
You cannot unring it.
The court fight decides where the betting happens and who collects the fee. It does not hand back a single year of compounding. That is why the legal question and the household question are not the same question.
Be fair about what this is not. A person who bets fifty dollars on a Sunday and stops is not ruining anything. The industry is legal, taxed, and advertised during the game he is watching. What matters is the money already assigned to a future and then reassigned.

Can it be undone?
The Supreme Court can settle the law and Congress can rewrite it. Neither returns the years the money spent somewhere else.

Who is already repositioning?
DraftKings and Flutter both rose on the ruling. Robinhood says it will appeal, and Kalshi argues the court overstepped.

What does being late cost?
A year of compounding at the front end is worth more than any year at the back. That clock runs whether the case is heard or not.
