PANDORA’S BOX
EVERYTHING GOT OUT. THE HOPE IS AT THE BOTTOM.
THE ONE-WAY DOOR
The pay-in-four box at the checkout now writes to a file that keeps what it is given
Affirm began sending Experian every new loan on April 1 last year. Twelve weeks later FICO shipped the scores that read them.
Four payments. No interest. No hard credit check.
That was the pitch, and it was true.
What changed is what happens afterwards.
On April 1 last year Affirm started sending Experian every new loan it writes.
Pay in 4 included.
Any lender pulling an Experian report sees that history.

YEARS A LATE MARK STAYS ON THE FILE

Opening one still takes no hard credit check. That is not the same as leaving no trace.
At the time, the company said it would not move a traditional score.
It added that new scoring models could change that.
Twelve weeks later FICO announced two.
Files are not the only things that get read. So does a change at the Federal Reserve, and some people read it for a living.

Trump Fed Takeover
Larry Benedict generated $274 million in profits for his clients by knowing where money flows when the Federal Reserve shifts.
He says Trump’s Fed Takeover is triggering the most significant shift in U.S. markets in nearly 20 years.
He’s already identified the one ticker he expects billions to flood into... and he’s giving away the name for free.

The order matters more than either half.
First the data went in. Then the thing that reads it arrived.
Not every provider does this.
Klarna and Afterpay still do not report to the three national bureaus.
Afterpay has said it will wait until reporting helps more than it hurts.
Sezzle leaves it to the customer.
Two people with the same habits can end up with different files.
It depends on which button they pressed at the checkout.
Now the size of it.
The Richmond Fed put these loans at about seventy billion dollars of purchases last year.
That is a little over one percent of what Americans put on credit cards.
One in five people with a credit record had already taken one by 2022.
The part worth sitting with is the lateness.
LendingTree found 41 percent of users late at least once in a year.
The year before it was 34.
Write-offs stayed low, well under the rate on credit cards.
Late is not default.
But late is what a file records, and it holds that for seven years.
So what does this cost you.
Pay on time and likely nothing, with a little credit built where there was none.
Be late once on a forty dollar order and the entry does not shrink to match the sum.
The file does not forget.
And none of it is backdated. Only loans written from that April forward.
A record of a purchase is not the purchase. What follows turns on a similar distinction, between owning a thing and taking a position on it.

Gold Skimming
A former hedge fund manager ranked in the top 1% by Barron’s has developed a three-step strategy to profit from gold, without buying a single ounce.
His followers have had the chance to collect $2,975... $3,781... and even $6,786 at a time. With a 73% win rate.
He calls it “Gold Skimming.” And he’s just revealed the full strategy for the first time.

Two honest limits.
Much of it still sits outside the core file a lender pulls.
The scores exist. Using one is the lender’s choice.
One practical aside, since the subject is credit files. Card terms are easier to compare in October than in January.

Can it be undone?
A reported line is not withdrawn because you would rather it were not. A late mark runs seven years.

The bureaus and the scoring models. Senators wrote to all three in May about this data.

Before the shopping season, find out which of the apps you use reports, and to whom. That turns on the provider, not on how careful you are.
If you use none of them, one thing is still worth doing. Pull your own file and look for a line you do not remember.
This data mostly sits outside the core file, and no lender must use the new scores.

A file that records the late payment records the paid one too. Four payments on time now count for something.
