OpenAI Says Its New Model Crossed A Critical Line
Astra is the first to reach the top of the company’s own cybersecurity rating. Access will be limited, it says.

A company graded its own product. OpenAI keeps a scale for how dangerous a model’s abilities are. On Tuesday it placed a new one at the top of the cybersecurity band.
|
|
The scale is worth a sentence. It runs from low to critical, and critical is the level the company itself says needs safeguards before release. Astra is the first model it has put there for cyber work.

Note what that admission is. Not a warning about the future. A grade the maker gave a thing that already exists and already works.

The company says access will be limited. That is a decision about distribution, and decisions about distribution get revisited.

Now put the same day’s second story beside it. Nikesh Arora runs Palo Alto Networks. He said roughly a trillion dollars of the country’s security equipment was built for a world before this. His firm sells the replacement, so read the number with that in mind.

Even discounted, the shape of it holds. The capability arrived first. Everything meant to stand in front of it is older than the problem.

That gap is the whole story, and it does not close on anybody’s schedule.

Be fair about the limits here. One company’s internal rating is not an independent audit. A firm with reason to sound careful also has reason to sound impressive. Neither reading changes what got built.

A capability does not come back once it is demonstrated.

Your end of it is dull and it is the only part you control. Banks and hospitals run on that older equipment. The easiest way in is usually a password you reused.
