The Nation’s Largest Reservoir Just Broke Its Own Record
The reading came in Thursday at one thousand forty point five feet, under the record set in twenty twenty two and the lowest since the lake was first filled.

Water does not come back fast. Lake Mead sits behind the Hoover Dam. It waters roughly twenty million people. Arizona, California, Nevada, and northern Mexico all draw from it. So does most of the farmland that feeds them.

The old mark was one thousand forty point five eight feet, set on July twenty eighth, twenty twenty two. Thursday came in under it. That earlier low was already the deepest reading since the reservoir first filled. Roosevelt was in the White House.

The mechanism is simple arithmetic. On Thursday the dam let out eleven thousand cubic feet per second and took in eight thousand six hundred. The lake has lost ground on thirteen of the last fourteen daily readings. It sits thirteen feet lower than a year ago. Outflow beats inflow almost every day.

Here is what the weekend coverage misses. The water shortage is colliding with the AI build. Arizona and Nevada both draw from this river. Both are also where hyperscalers chose to put new data centers, because power is cheap and land is open. Cooling a server hall takes water. Every gallon promised to a machine was already promised to a farmer.

We graded this CLOSING because one handle is still attached. A wet winter next year could pause the drop. But four wet winters would not refill what the last two decades drained. The trend is what we grade, not the weather.
