PANDORA’S BOX EVERYTHING GOT OUT. THE HOPE IS AT THE BOTTOM. |
THE ONE-WAY DOOR The complaint still gets filed. What people wrote in it is no longer published. Six point six million complaints went in last year. Since August the paragraph inside them stays out of public view. |
Six point six million. That is how many consumer complaints reached the federal consumer bureau last year. |
Ninety percent went straight to the company named in them. More than four thousand companies. |
Those companies answered more than ninety nine percent on time. |
About five point four million closed with an explanation or with relief. |
More than four million of them were about the credit bureaus alone. |
| 6.6M COMPLAINTS IN THE LAST FULL YEAR WITH NARRATIVES | → | The bureau still collects them and still forwards them. What stopped is the publishing of the paragraph the person wrote. |
|
|
For more than a decade a complaint came in two parts. |
There was the structured part. Product, company, state, date, and the company’s answer. |
And there was the narrative. The paragraph where the person wrote what actually happened. |

Publishing that paragraph was never automatic. You had to tick a box. |
On August 14 the bureau announced it would stop publishing them. |
It called the publication discretionary. Not something the statute requires. |
Its reasons were three. A narrative is one side of a dispute, and nobody checks it. |
The database is a self selected sample, so it can misread a company’s record. |
And unverified allegations can damage a firm that broke no law. |
The credit bureaus had made that argument for years. One trade group called the portal a Yelp for financial services. |
The consent box itself is gone now. A complaint filed today cannot be published later, even if the person wants it published. |
What already went up is still reachable. It moved to the bureau’s freedom of information reading room. |
A reading room is not a search box. You ask, and then you wait. |
Everything else about the system runs as it did before. |
File a complaint and it still goes to the company. The company still has to answer it. |
The data still goes to the banking regulators, to the trade commission and to the states. |
So the machinery is intact. The window into it is smaller. |
That matters in one specific way. |
The structured record tells you a company drew complaints. It does not tell you what they were about. |
The paragraph told you whether the trouble was a fee, a servicing error, or a debt that was never yours. |
Underneath all of this sits a funding fight that is not finished. |
In December last year more than twenty state attorneys general sued. The dispute was a refusal to draw the bureau’s funding from the Federal Reserve. |
A judge ruled in September that the refusal crossed a constitutional line. That ruling is under appeal. |
What a record shows, and who is allowed to see it, runs through more than one argument about money. |

This is no longer a proposal. Around 137 nations are building digital currencies, and a settlement network called Project mBridge already moves money between central banks without touching the dollar or American banks. China’s digital yuan has processed enormous volumes. India’s grew sharply last year. The UAE launches this year and Russia follows next. Twenty six central banks have joined.

Three honest limits before you file this away. |
The narratives were never verified, and the bureau always said so on the page. |
Complaint counts are not violation counts. A company with many customers collects many complaints. |
And nothing has been deleted. The old paragraphs exist, behind a request form. |
EVERY LEAD PASSES BEFORE IT RUNS The One-Way-Door Test |
01 | Can it be undone? Publication could be switched back on. The consent box is gone for everything filed in the meantime, and that part does not come back.
|
02 | Who is already repositioning? The firms written about most. More than four million complaints last year named the credit bureaus.
|
03 | What does being late cost? Nothing you can claim back. It costs the check you used to be able to run before signing with somebody.

FROM OUR PARTNERS | |
Imagine opening your retirement statement tomorrow.
$500,000.
Not a penny missing.
But there’s a problem...
That $500,000 may not buy what you thought it would.
That’s how inflation can quietly eat away at a retirement.
No market crash required.
No money has to disappear from your account.
Your dollars simply buy LESS.
America’s national debt has now surged past $40 trillion, while inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target.
Food. Healthcare. Housing. Gas.
As prices rise, the purchasing power of the dollars you’ve saved gets squeezed.
Because your statement can still say $500,000 even when those dollars don’t buy what they used to.

THE MOVE · TWO VERSIONS, PICK YOURS Before you sign with a servicer, a card issuer or a collector, still search the complaint database by company name. The counts, the products and the dates are all still there. For the written detail, your state attorney general and your state banking regulator both take complaints, and several publish what they find. That is where the paragraphs live now. Complaint volume is not proof of wrongdoing, and a large customer base produces large numbers. Read it as a reason to ask questions, not as a verdict. |

WHAT’S LEFT AT THE BOTTOM The paragraph you write still travels. It reaches the company, the bureau and your state. It just no longer reaches the next person standing where you stood. WE WATCH THE BOX. |
