EVERYTHING GOT OUT. THE HOPE IS AT THE BOTTOM.
THE ONE-WAY DOOR
A car with no steering wheel is taking fares, and the rule that made that strange is being rewritten
The exemption was granted in July. On Monday the standard itself went out for comment.
The steering wheel is not a design choice. It is a federal requirement.
So is the brake pedal.
Both sit inside standards written for a person in a seat.
On July 30 the government made an exception.
Zoox received the first commercial exemption of its kind in American history.
Portions of eight safety standards were set aside for it.

An exemption is one company at a time. A standard is everybody.
The grant runs two years, to July 2028.
Paid rides began in Las Vegas in August.
The remote operators have to sit inside the United States, and the operating area has to be published.
Zoox may not sell the cars to the public.
FROM OUR PARTNERS
Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are supposed to represent opposite visions of America...
So why are they both pushing the country toward the same controversial economic system?
For nearly 30 years, I’ve helped millions of investors understand the economic shifts that create, and destroy, fortunes. And I’ve spent the past several months investigating why these supposed political enemies are now aligned on one core policy.
The answer is far bigger than either man, and even bigger than the coming midterms, because regardless of how you vote, neither party has any intention of stopping what happens next.
Because as you’ll discover in my critical investment broadcast, everything from the government taking stakes in companies like Intel, Lithium Americas, and MP Materials.
To Trump’s strike on Venezuela... his deal with Greenland... his seemingly never-ending slew of executive orders... and increasingly centralized grip over the economy...
All the way to the surging popularity of radical socialist politicians like Bernie Sanders, AOC, and Zohran Mamdani...
It’s all deeply and inexorably intertwined in what I believe is the most consequential story of the year.
A turning point that one Nobel Prize winner says is dividing not just the economy but our entire society.
And as you’ll discover here, I believe the financial decisions you make in the face of this event could dictate whether you’re enriched, left stuck in the past, or impoverished by the seismic changes barreling down upon America.
The stocks to buy... the stocks to sell... and the three money moves that could help you and your loved ones end up on the winning side of this new economic reality...
Good investing,

That is an exemption. One company, one fleet, one window.
On Monday something wider was published.
The government proposed rewriting the standard itself.
The lighting rules go first.
Today a turn signal has to cancel itself when the wheel comes back.
Under the proposal that applies only to cars with a wheel.
The same goes for switching the headlights by hand or foot.
And for the small lights on the dash that tell a driver what is on.
Nobody is reading that dash.
There is also a new lamp.
Cyan, optional, steady, front, sides and back.
It lights only when no person is expected to be watching the road.
A color that means nobody is driving.
Comments close on November 25.
Ten more standards are queued behind this one.
Gear displays, defrosters, wipers, tire placards, brake controls, controls and displays, mirrors, stability control, sun visors, warning labels.
Mirrors is the one to watch.
The agency is also writing its first safety standard for automated driving.
The federal guidance is being redone for the first time since 2017.
So what does this cost you.
Today, nothing. None of it touches a car you already own.
The cost sits further out, and it is not money.
It is that the rules stop describing a person at the controls.
This is how a requirement disappears.
Nobody votes on a standard.
Every rule here turns on one question. What a machine may do with nobody in the seat.

AI now writes more code, the instructions inside apps. Think of it as a fast new hire who is new to the building. It can fix one thing and break another, such as billing, because it does not yet know how the whole place works.
Bito gives AI the tour: a map of how a company’s software connects. With that map, the AI can check what a change will hit before it makes it. Companies pay Bito for that tour.
Bito is raising on Wefunder. Investors can back the company through a SAFE, a contract that may later turn into a small ownership share.

THE MOVE · TWO VERSIONS, PICK YOURS
If you find yourself behind a vehicle showing a steady cyan lamp, read it the way the rule intends. Nobody is expected to be watching the road.
If you own a car, there is nothing here to do. The one worth following is the mirror standard, because that is the rule that changes what a car looks like.
All of this is a proposal except the exemption, which is granted. Comments close on November 25.
