THE ONE-WAY DOOR
Pay grew 3% in a year, its slowest pace since 2021
Friday’s jobs report added only 29,000 jobs. The bigger number for your household was the one on the paycheck.
The report landed at 8:30 Friday morning. Employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, well below forecasts. Revisions cut another 60,000 from July and August, and July now shows a loss.
That was the headline. The line under it matters more to your household. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% in September and 3% from a year earlier, the slowest annual pace since 2021.
Here is where it lands at your end. Bloomberg estimates pay has now probably trailed inflation for six months in a row. A raise that loses to prices is a pay cut with better manners.

Purchasing power lost in those months does not come back with next year’s raise. The next raise starts from the lower base. |

Editor’s Note: Jeff Brown is an angel investor who invested in hundreds of deals involving private companies with returns as high as 5,344%, 7,367%, and even a mind-blowing 11,011%. Today he’s showing how to claim a stake in an Elon Musk-backed startup that’s growing faster than Tesla and SpaceX… starting with less than $50. Click here to see the details and get the name of this startup, 100% free… or read more below.
Dear Reader,
If you did not claim a stake in SpaceX before the IPO…
And that I believe will be the next hot IPO on Wall Street.
Bloomberg has just confirmed that…
This startup is moving towards “a blockbuster IPO.”
But you do NOT have to wait until the IPO.
Click here now and I’ll show you how to claim your pre-IPO stake for as little as $50.
Look, no other market event creates more overnight wealth…
Than an exciting tech company going public.
For example, early investors who got in at the pre-IPO stage had a chance to turn $1,000 into…
More than $1 million in Facebook when the company went public...
More than $1.6 million in Uber on its IPO day.
And more than $2.3 million in Google the day the company went public.
We have so much to look forward to, Jeff Brown Founder & CEO, Brownstone Research

The mix of jobs says the same thing. Restaurants and bars added 11,000, about a third of the month’s total. Health care added 17,000, roughly half its usual pace.
Wall Street read it as good news. Stock futures rose, Treasury yields and the dollar fell, and traders trimmed bets on a Fed rate hike this year.

FROM OUR PARTNERS |

The government rents energy land at $2 an acre. At recent auctions, companies bid $412, 206 times the asking price, and every parcel sold. Washington doubled the auction schedule because it can’t sell the land fast enough. The next sale is October 20th: 84 parcels of prime Nevada geothermal country, more than a quarter-million acres. One company, with sixty years of infrastructure, sits at the center of what they’re all bidding on.

That is the split worth seeing. A weak job market can lower your borrowing costs and weaken your bargaining power in the same week.
You have heard that the job market is strong for three years. Unemployment at 4.2% is still low. What changed is who holds the cards: slower hiring, fewer openings, smaller raises.
Raises get decided in the fall, and this fall the numbers sit on the employer’s side of the desk.

EVERY LEAD PASSES BEFORE IT RUNS
The One-Way-Door Test
01 |
Can it be undone?
Not for the months already lost. Prices rarely fall back, so pay has to outrun them later just to break even.
02 |
Who is already repositioning?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics published the count and Bloomberg ran the wage math. Traders cut hike bets within hours, and the Fed meets later this month.
03 |
What does being late cost?
Every month behind carries into next year’s base. Waiting for a January review means arguing from a lower starting point.
THE MOVE · WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME
If you still draw a paycheck, write down your raise minus this year’s price increases before your review. Walk in with that one number, not a feeling.
With hiring this slow, pushing hard carries risk, and some employers will say no. The number still frames the talk, even if the answer is a bonus or time off.
