The last American troops left Iraq today, 23 years after the invasion
Baghdad called it a day of sovereignty. The same date was the deadline Iraq gave Washington to disarm its militias.

Baghdad held a parade this morning. Iraqi and American commanders marked the withdrawal of U.S. forces, 23 years after the 2003 invasion. Iraq calls it its day of sovereignty.

The exit came in two steps. U.S. forces left the rest of Iraq in January. About 1,500 service members stayed on in the Kurdish north until today.
